Town Sports 2017

On Tuesday the 20th June Abercorn's finest athletes travelled to Cheney Park to take on the best local athletes from Ballydown, Bridge, Edenderry and St. Mary's. Unfortunately we did not win the overall competition but we did win lots of medals across the events.

Healthy Lifestyle Week

Our  Healthy Lifestyle Week culminated on Friday 16th June with the whole school having a picnic lunch outside in the playground. The pupils were encouraged to dress in multi coloured clothing  and then took part in a sponsored Colour Run. This was certainly a colourful occasion and thoroughly enjoyed by all. It was also fantastic to see Elsa joining in with her friends and classmates. The week has seen pupils participate in a wide variety of activities and the school would like to thank  Paul Evans and Aaron Nelson who organised sessions for all of our pupils.

DSNI Visit

On Wednesday 8th February Mark from Disability Sports Northern Ireland came to visit the Year 5 classes. Mark happened to bring along a GB Paralympic Athlete called David. David represented Great Britain in the Rio Games in 2016 playing 7- aside, C.P football.

David and Mark spoke to us all about other local athletes who represented us at the games e.g. Bethany Firth, ‘the golden girl’ and Jason Smith, the fastest Paralympian ever. They showed us some videos of them in action and told us about the events they competed in. They wanted to teach us that sport is for everyone.

They showed us the sports we would be trying out. We played Boccia, which is a throwing game quite like bowls. In Goal ball, like football, only you  wear a blindfold and listen to the sound of the bell in the ball.  In Wheelchair basketball we had to move in a sports wheelchair and try to shoot into the hoop. Indoor curling was next which is quite like the version on ice where you have to push the stone into the middle of the target.  Finally we got to have a go on a wheelchair racing chair where we had to see how many times we could spin the wheels in 10 seconds.

It was safe to say that all of the boys and girls in Year 5 enjoyed their time trying out all of the sports available with wheelchair basketball being the most popular. We would like to say a huge thank you to Mark, David and DSNI for visiting us and letting us try out all the different activities. Sport is most definitely for everyone.

Tesco Farm to Fork

On Tuesday 7th February, Mr Craig’s Year 5 class was invited to participate in Tesco’s Farm to Fork programme. When we arrived in Tesco we met Adam and Joan who gave us a lovely snack with lots of delicious fruit and some bread too. Adam then told us all about the 'eat well' plate and why a BALANCED diet is so important for us.
We had a quiz guessing how many sugar cubes were in some of our favourite drinks. Coca Cola had the most with 14 sugar cubes.  Children our age are only meant to have the equivalent of 6 sugar cubes a day!

Next Adam and Joan took us to the fruit and vegetable section where we had a treasure hunt to find the fruits and vegetables of different colours as well as finding out where our fruit and vegetables came from.

Then they took us to the cereal section and challenged us to think which cereal contained the most sugar. They showed us how to find out how much sugar a product contained. Frosties and Coco Pops had the greatest amount of sugar with Weetabix having the least amount.

Finally, as we listened so well Adam and Joan took us into the bakery where they allowed us to make doughnuts! They were delicious! Thank you Tesco.

Let’s Go Giants, Let’s Go!

On Friday 20th January the Year 7’s went to see the Belfast Giants play the Nottingham Panthers. It was a very exciting game but the Giants held on to win 5-4. We would like to say a big thank you to Gordy and the Giants Healthy Lifestyle team for giving us the tickets.

We had a celebration of all the children who had full attendance in Term 1.
The children each received a certificate during assembly. We are very proud of all the children and hope they all try hard to attend school in January. If they achieve this they will get a homework pass.

The Friendship Four

On Friday night over 40 Year 5 and 6 pupils  had the opportunity to go and watch the Friendship Four Ice Hockey Tournament in the SSE Arena in Belfast. The boys and girls got to watch a very exciting game with plenty of goals, where the Vermont Catamounts played the UMass Minutemen. The Catamounts won the game 4-2.
The boys and girls had a great evening cheering, dancing and attempting to appear on  the big screen. We can't wait until January when we will be heading back to the SSE Arena with the Year 7pupils to watch a Belfast Giants game.

Belfast Giants Visit

On Tuesday Key Stage 2 were visited by The Belfast Giants Healthy Lifestyle team. Our friend Gordy came back this year to discuss the choices we make, everything from friends, clothes and the food we eat. He discussed with us the importance of making healthy choices when eating food. He brought along the Giants number 14 Michael Forney who told us about how he became a hockey star as well as showing us some exercises we could do at home to keep fit and healthy. Best of all they gave us 50 free tickets to a Giants game in January! (More details to follow)
